Choosing Your New Wooden Coffee Table

Once simply a minor part of a larger furniture set, coffee tables are now widely available as distinct, unique pieces of furniture that can do a great deal to accent your living room.  So many different designs and styles are available that it can become very overwhelming when it comes time to shop for a new coffee table.  So when choosing a new wooden coffee table for your living room, make sure to consider your living space and how you live.  Here are a few things to make sure you keep in mind when searching for your new piece of furniture.

To start with, what are you using this particular piece of furniture for the most?  A piece used to display some picture frames or kept clear is different than the one that always has coloring books and DVDs sitting on it.  While some coffee tables never have drinks resting on them (at least, not without coasters), some are used as makeshift dining tables.  So make sure that the design you adore can withstand whatever treatment your household will give it in the coming years.

Next, take a look at your home and how you decorate it.  Do you decorate strictly with a specific style?  You may be in love with a modern style, but have a very traditional home.  Or you might like a dark table, but if your living room does not get much sunlight, light colored furniture would help brighten up the room.  However, a dark wooden coffee table would lend a much richer, complete look to a traditionally decorated living room.  Of course, you decide which style you buy in the end, but keeping with your home’s style will help ensure you still love your table in the future.

Finally, what size should your piece be?  A pretty standard size for coffee tables is about 18″ high, but you want to buy the one that is most comfortable for you and your family.  The traditional height for a table is one that is even with or a couple of inches lower than the sofa or chair seats.

How to repair coffee table/end tables that have had water damage?

I have a 2 yr old set of coffee table/end tables that are cherry. I was out of commission over the last year and family and friends that came to help set drinks on the coffee tables/end tables. The water has made the tops look like they have split or have huge scratches. Is there anyway to salvage these tables and make them look good again?

It sounds like the finish has fissured and water has gotten underneath. If this is the situation, it will soon flake off. If this is the situation, the only cure is to strip and refinish.

Who else hates the way all these new coffee joints serve bad coffee in a paper cup?

Why are they so popular? Gloria Jeans in particular seems to always serve bad coffee, with burnt milk but everyone loves it. I don’t get it. And why must they serve it in a paper cup even when you’re not taking-away? – it’s wasteful of paper, creating litter and is not as nice to drink out of. I just wanted to know if anybody else misses a good old proper solid coffee cup with a decent coffee in it instead of a paper cup with $#it coffee in it.
