What is the best way to decorate with brown walls and dark blue carpet?

Well, we just moved into an apartment that has dark blue carpet, we want to completely re-decorate but we just don’t know what to do, in the living room there are 2 walls that are painted a medium coffee color, but we could possibly have those painted to be white like the rest of the walls, in the kitchen there is brown wood-like vinyl and i just have no idea how i can make this place look good, but i wanted to go for a more modern look, can anyone suggest any furniture styles or anything that would look good? @___@ it would be a lot of help, thanks.

I say there’s enough color in your apartment already! Lucky you! Most people have a hard time ADDING color! I think your best plan of action would be to stick with white at this point. The walls that are white now? Go to a fabric store and pick out a patterned fabric, geometric or heavy texture would be a good contemporary look, and cover those 2 walls with that fabric. That way, if you move or get sick of it, you can take down the fabric and repurpose it into pillows or upholstered chairs or curtains. If I were you, I’d choose either a complementary lighter blue or stick with that shade of brown on the walls. Then start pulling colors from the walls (blue and brown) and your chosen fabric (which will most likely have cream or white) and choose furniture. Then, just for unexpected pops of color add a sunny yellow throw blanket, pretty yellow flowers or a yellow serving dish. Keep it simple! When you’re done, the busiest thing in the apartment should be the patterned wall. Everything else should have clean lines. If you have space for decorative accents: don’t over-do it. Again, the focal point should be the patterned wall.
Just a few last decorating tips:
1. Try not to let 2 colors touch each other. For example, your brown vinyl in the kitchen shouldn’t have brown chairs on it. Your blue carpet shouldn’t have a blue sofa on it.
2. Don’t forget the details! Remember those yellow flowers we talked about? Consider putting them in a white basket. That’s the obvious choice. The detail? Adding a blue ribbon to the basket, just a small one, off to one side. You want people to walk in and think “oh, ok. Blue, brown, yellow and white!” (or whatever colors you choose). You don’t want your guests to be confused about what you were going for.
3. Add personal touches!!!! Got a pet? Take a photo, Photoshop it with the hues of your new apartment and then make a collage. Contemporary, yes. Cold, no!

I ask this question in the Christmas section because you always see gift packs with coffee beans and it’s not instant coffee. And I am always worried that the gift receipient doesn’t have a coffee maker.

Yes, you can make it “murphy style” or some refer to it as cowboy or camp side style. Just use the ground bean and a pot of water, bring to a boil and let the grounds settle. Sometimes I still prefer the way brewing coffee this way gets you by the short and curlies.

If it is whole bean it might not work so well, but they could use a small spice mill or even a mortar and pestle if need be to grind up the beans.
